When to Schedule an Oil Burner Tune-Up

From the Alcus family · Alcus Fuel Oil & Sons, Amityville · Updated October 30, 2026

An oil burner should be cleaned and tuned once a year. The best time is late spring to early fall — but if your system hasn't been serviced in over a year, the best time is before the next cold snap.

Why it matters

  • Fewer no-heat calls. A clogged nozzle or filter is one of the most common reasons a burner quits in January.
  • Less oil burned. Soot on the heat exchanger acts like insulation, so more heat goes up the chimney.
  • Safety. A technician checks for leaks, draft problems and signs of trouble before they're dangerous.

What a tune-up usually includes

  • Replacing the nozzle and oil filter(s)
  • Cleaning the burner and the combustion chamber / heat exchanger
  • Checking the flame, draft and combustion and adjusting the burner
  • Checking controls, safety devices and visible oil lines
  • A look at the tank for rust, wet spots or weeping seams

Exact steps depend on your equipment; we'll tell you what we did.

Signs you need service now, not next summer

  • Soot around the burner or smoke from the chimney
  • Oil smell, rumbling or banging at start-up
  • The reset button trips
  • Your oil use jumped without a cold winter to explain it

Save with a service contract

A service contract includes a yearly tune-up and priority service when it's coldest. Equipment 20+ years old and needing repairs every winter? Ask about a free boiler replacement or furnace replacement estimate.

Questions

How often should an oil burner be serviced?

Once a year. Oil burners leave soot behind, and a yearly cleaning keeps the system safe, efficient and less likely to quit on the coldest night.

What is the best time of year for an oil burner tune-up?

Late spring through early fall, when you are not depending on the heat and appointments are easier to get. If you missed it, book now — before a cold snap.

Can HEAP pay for a tune-up?

HEAP has a Clean & Tune benefit for eligible homeowners. Apply through your county Department of Social Services, then call us.
