Answer a few questions for a rough estimate for a typical Long Island winter. No email needed.

How the estimate works

  • Yearly use ≈ heated square feet × 0.35–0.55 gallons, plus about 200 gallons if your boiler also makes hot water.
  • Daily use follows the weather: we spread your heating use across a typical season and show a mild day and a cold day.
  • Room in your tank = about 90% of the tank size minus what's in it now.

Want to cut your usage? A yearly burner tune-up keeps your system burning clean. More reading: how long a tank of oil lasts and how to read your tank gauge. Out already? See ran out of oil.

How much heating oil does a Long Island house use per year?

Many South Shore homes use somewhere around 600–1,000 gallons a year, depending on size, insulation and whether oil also heats the water. Use the calculator above for your own estimate.

If your gauge is at 1/4 on a 275-gallon tank, a fill is usually around 150–190 gallons. Or ask for "fill my tank" and the driver fills it safely.
