When a small delivery makes sense

  • You're out and money is tight. 25 gallons gets oil back in the tank. Then plan a bigger order soon.
  • End of the heating season. You only need enough for hot water and a few cool nights.
  • Selling or closing a house. Keep the heat on without filling a tank you're leaving.
  • Waiting on HEAP. Bridge the gap until your benefit comes through. HEAP help.

When it costs you more

Because small deliveries carry the highest per-gallon price, ordering 25 gallons over and over costs more than ordering once at 150. If you can, move up a tier: 100 gallons and up costs noticeably less per gallon than under 100, and 150 gallons and up less again. Not sure how much fits? A 275-gallon tank at 1/4 usually takes about 165–190 gallons. Read your gauge or try the heating oil calculator.

If you've already run out, read what to do when you run out of oil and restarting a burner after a runout.

Small delivery questions

What is the minimum heating oil delivery?

25 gallons. You can order 25, 50, 75, 100 gallons or any amount above that, or "fill my tank."

Why do small oil deliveries cost more per gallon?

A truck, a driver and a trip cost about the same whether we pump 25 gallons or 250. On a small delivery that cost is spread over fewer gallons, so the price per gallon is higher. Deliveries under 100 gallons cost the most per gallon.

How long will 25 gallons of heating oil last?

It depends on the house and the weather. A typical South Shore home burns 2–3 gallons on a mild day and 6–8 or more on a very cold one, so 25 gallons may last only 3–4 days in a cold snap, longer in spring or fall. See our guide on how long heating oil lasts.

Will 25 gallons get my burner running if I ran out?

Usually 25 gallons is enough oil to reach the burner, but after a runout the burner may need to be primed (bled) by a technician before it restarts. Take more if you can, so you don't run out again in a few days.

Can I use HEAP for a small delivery?

We accept HEAP. Call 631-264-8800 to confirm your benefit and the delivery size before you order.

Do you charge an extra fee for small deliveries?

Small deliveries are priced per gallon at a higher tier; there's no separate rush fee. Night emergency deliveries carry a $95 emergency fee, and we tell you before we come.
