Cheap heating oil on Long Island: how to pay less per gallon

The price you pay for heating oil depends on more than the number on a price list. How many gallons you order, how you pay, whether you're on a contract and whether you run out can change your bill more than a few cents' difference between dealers.

8 ways to pay less for heating oil

  1. Pay the driver cash. Our cash price is 20¢ a gallon below the posted card price. That's about $30 on a 150-gallon delivery. We don't take checks. Cash vs. card, explained.
  2. Order 150 gallons or more. The per-gallon price drops as the delivery gets bigger, and deliveries under 100 gallons cost the most. A 275-gallon tank at 1/4 usually takes 150 gallons or more. How much does my tank need?
  3. Choose "fill my tank" if you have room. You pay only for the gallons actually delivered, and a full delivery lands in the bigger, lower-priced tiers.
  4. Order will-call (COD). No contract and no sign-up fee. Our COD price is lower per gallon than automatic delivery; the trade-off is that you watch your own tank.
  5. Don't run out. A runout can mean a small emergency delivery at the highest per-gallon price, a night emergency fee ($95 when we come at night), and a service call if the burner needs to be primed. Order at 1/4 tank. What to do if you're out.
  6. Keep your burner tuned. A dirty nozzle or filter wastes oil. An annual tune-up keeps the burner running clean. When to schedule a tune-up. More ways to burn less: how to use less heating oil this winter.
  7. Get help if you qualify. HEAP can pay part of your heating bill, and we accept HEAP. HEAP help for Nassau and Suffolk.
  8. Watch the price. Our price follows the wholesale market every business day. Sign up for opt-in price-drop emails on our heating oil prices page.

How to compare heating oil prices fairly

Price-comparison sites and phone quotes don't always describe the same thing. Before you decide, check:

  • Same gallons. A 100-gallon price and a 150-gallon price aren't comparable.
  • Cash or card? Many dealers, including us, quote a lower cash price.
  • Tax. Is the quote before or after sales tax? Our prices are before tax.
  • Fees. Ask about small-delivery, after-hours or emergency fees. We don't charge a rush fee; night emergency deliveries carry a $95 fee, and we tell you before we come.
  • Who serves you in a cold snap? We take phone calls first, then service-contract and automatic customers, during cold snaps.

Want a budget instead of a lower price? A budget plan spreads the cost over the year. It doesn't change the price per gallon. Thinking of switching fuels? Read oil vs. gas vs. heat pump on Long Island.

Paying less for heating oil: questions

Who has the cheapest heating oil on Long Island?

Nobody can honestly say one company is always cheapest. Prices change every business day and differ by dealer, ZIP code, delivery size and how you pay. To compare fairly, ask every dealer for the same thing: the same number of gallons, the same payment method (cash or card), before or after tax, and any fees. Our price for your ZIP is on this page, or call 631-264-8800.

How can I pay less for heating oil?

Pay cash (we take 20¢ a gallon off our card price), order 150 gallons or more at a time, order will-call (COD) instead of automatic, don't run out, and keep your burner tuned so it burns less oil. If money is tight, check whether you qualify for HEAP.

Is it cheaper to pay cash for heating oil?

With us, yes: cash paid to the driver is 20¢ a gallon less than our posted card price. On a 150-gallon delivery that is about $30. Card customers pay the posted price with no extra card fee.

Does ordering more oil lower the price per gallon?

Yes. Our price per gallon drops as the delivery gets bigger. Deliveries under 100 gallons cost the most per gallon; our minimum is 25 gallons.

Is automatic delivery more expensive than COD?

Our automatic delivery costs a little more per gallon than will-call (COD), because we watch your usage and the weather and deliver before you run low. COD costs less per gallon, but you watch your own tank.

When is the best time to buy heating oil?

Our price follows the wholesale market every business day, so no one can promise when it will be lowest. What you can control: order before you are low, so you are never forced to buy a small emergency delivery on a cold night.
