What's in Long Island Heating Oil? Ultra-Low Sulfur and Bioheat B10
From the Alcus family · Alcus Fuel Oil & Sons, Amityville · Updated October 31, 2026
The heating oil going into Long Island tanks today isn't the oil of 20 years ago. Here's what's in it, why, and what it means for you.
What we deliver
We deliver No. 2 ultra-low sulfur heating oil, Bioheat B10: 90% ultra-low sulfur heating oil and 10% biodiesel, dyed red as required for heating fuel. It's the same grade used across Nassau and Suffolk.
Ultra-low sulfur (ULS)
New York requires heating oil to be ultra-low sulfur, no more than 15 parts per million. Older heating oil had hundreds or thousands of ppm. Less sulfur means less soot and scale building up in the boiler and chimney, and cleaner exhaust. You still need a yearly tune-up, but a clean-burning fuel helps the burner stay efficient between cleanings.
Bioheat and the New York biodiesel law
- Nassau and Suffolk heating oil has had to include biodiesel for years.
- Since July 1, 2025: at least 10% biodiesel (B10).
- 2030: at least 20% (B20).
Biodiesel is made from renewable sources such as used cooking oil and soybean oil. Blended into heating oil, it cuts carbon emissions compared with straight petroleum oil.
Does it change anything for your system?
- No conversion needed. B10 runs in standard oil burners and tanks.
- Keep up with maintenance. Biodiesel can loosen old sludge in older tanks, which is one more reason to change the oil filter at your yearly tune-up.
- Avoid water in the tank. Keep the fill and vent caps tight. If you suspect water, or your tank is old and rusty, see oil tank replacement.
- Price. Blends are reflected in the per-gallon price you see on today's prices.

Questions
What heating oil do you deliver?
No. 2 ultra-low sulfur heating oil blended with 10% biodiesel (Bioheat B10), dyed as required for heating fuel.
Is Bioheat safe for my oil burner and tank?
Yes. B10 is a standard heating oil blend sold across Long Island and works in ordinary oil burners and tanks with no changes. It meets New York’s requirements for heating oil.
What does New York law require for heating oil?
New York requires heating oil sold in Nassau and Suffolk to contain biodiesel: at least 10% (B10) since July 1, 2025, rising to 20% (B20) in 2030. Heating oil must also be ultra-low sulfur (15 ppm).
Is ultra-low sulfur heating oil the same as diesel?
It’s chemically very close to on-road ultra-low sulfur diesel, but heating oil is dyed red because it isn’t taxed as road fuel. It must not be used in vehicles.
