Oil Smell After a Heating Oil Delivery: Normal or Not?
From the Alcus family · Alcus Fuel Oil & Sons, Amityville · Updated October 31, 2026
Smell heating oil after a delivery? A faint smell outside for a short time can be normal. A strong or lasting smell inside, or any oil you can see, needs a call. Here's how to tell the difference and what to do.
Oil on the floor, or anyone feeling sick? Follow our oil leak steps now, and call 631-264-8800 (24/7 emergency line). If anyone feels sick, or you smell exhaust or smoke, get everyone outside and call 911.
Usually normal
- A faint oil smell outside near the fill pipe or vent for a short while after the truck leaves.
- A slight smell near the tank that fades within the day, with no wet spots anywhere.
Not normal: call us
- A strong smell in the basement, utility room or living space, or one that's still there the next day.
- Wet spots, drips or "weeping" on the tank, the filter, the oil line or the floor.
- Oil on the ground or siding around the fill or vent pipe.
- Oil smoke, soot or a "puff" from the burner. Turn the burner's emergency switch off first.
What to do right now
- Air it out, no flames. Open windows. Don't smoke or use anything with a flame or spark near the oil.
- Look. Check the tank seams and bottom, the filter, the line to the burner and the floor. Outside, check the fill and vent pipes and the cap.
- Soak up any oil with plain clay kitty litter or rags, and keep kids and pets away. Bag the used litter and set it outside.
- Call 631-264-8800. Tell us what you see and smell. Don't try to fix the tank or oil lines yourself.
Why it can happen after a delivery
- A full tank shows weak spots. An old tank that seemed fine when low can weep at a seam or fitting once it's full.
- Fill cap or vent. A loose or missing cap, or a small drip at the fill or vent pipe, can leave a smell outside.
- Burner trouble. If the smell only comes when the burner runs, it usually needs service: see when to schedule a tune-up.

Questions
Is it normal to smell oil after a delivery?
A faint oil smell outside near the fill pipe, or briefly near the vent, can happen for a short while after a delivery as air is pushed out of the tank. A strong smell inside the house, a smell that lasts, or oil you can see is not normal: call us.
Why does my basement smell like oil after a delivery?
Common causes are a loose fill cap or a small drip at the fill or vent pipe, a weeping fitting, filter or tank seam that shows up when the tank is full, or oil from an old leak warming up. Look at the tank, filter and floor, then call us.
What if I smell oil smoke or exhaust, not just oil?
That can mean a burner problem such as a puff-back. Turn the burner emergency switch off and call us. If anyone feels sick, get everyone outside and call 911.
Do I have to report an oil spill?
New York State requires most oil spills to be reported to the NYS DEC Spill Hotline, 1-800-457-7362, within 2 hours. A small spill (under 5 gallons) contained on a hard surface like a basement floor and cleaned up within 2 hours is the exception.
