Which Propane Tanks Can Be Refilled? Grill, RV & Portable Cylinders
From the Alcus family · Alcus Fuel Oil & Sons, Amityville · Updated October 31, 2026
If you can safely carry it to us, we can probably refill it. We refill portable propane tanks you bring to our Amityville yard: grill tanks and larger transportable cylinders. Here's how to tell whether your tank qualifies before you load it in the car.
Common portable tank sizes
| Tank | Common use | Propane when full |
|---|---|---|
| 20 lb | Gas grills, patio heaters | ≈ 4.7 gal |
| 30 lb | RV and camper cylinders | ≈ 7 gal |
| 40 lb | RVs, larger heaters, food trucks | ≈ 9.4 gal |
| 100 lb | Portable cylinders for heaters, cooking, job sites | ≈ 23.6 gal |
Typical sizes, for reference. Any portable cylinder that's in date and in good shape can usually be refilled; call 631-264-8800 and tell us the size to confirm before you come.
Tanks we don't fill
- Tanks that stay at a house: the 120, 250, 500 or 1,000 gallon tanks next to a home or buried in the yard. Those are filled by a propane delivery truck. We don't deliver propane.
- Out-of-date cylinders (more than 12 years past the collar date, and not requalified).
- Damaged tanks: heavy rust, dents, bulges, fire damage, or a bent collar or foot ring.
- Small grill-size tanks without an OPD valve. Tanks from 4 to 40 lb need an overfill protection device, which has a triangular (three-lobed) handwheel. An old round or star handwheel means the valve has to be replaced first.
- Disposable 1 lb camping canisters. They aren't made to be refilled.
Check your tank in 30 seconds
- Date: find the month-year stamp on the collar. Under 12 years old (or a newer requalification stamp)? Good.
- Valve: three-lobed handwheel on a 4–40 lb tank? Good.
- Body: no deep rust, dents or damage, and the foot ring is solid? Good.
- Size: something other than the sizes above? Call first.
Bringing a tank in
- Come during office hours (Monday–Friday 8 am–4:30 pm, Saturday 8 am–12 pm, Sunday closed) and call ahead at 631-264-8800 so someone is in the yard.
- Valve closed, plug or cap on if you have one. Transport the tank upright and secured so it can't roll or tip.
- Keep a window cracked and go straight there and back. Never leave a propane tank in a hot car or closed trunk.
- Address: 238 Broadway, Amityville, NY 11701. On Route 110 (Broadway), south of Sunrise Highway on the west side, behind Pete's Diner. More on our propane refill page.

Questions
Can you refill a 100 lb propane tank?
Usually, yes: it's a portable cylinder, so if it's in date and in good shape and you can bring it to our yard upright and secured, we can refill it. A full 100 lb cylinder weighs about 170 lb, so plan how you'll load and unload it. Call 631-264-8800 before you come so someone is in the yard.
Can you refill RV and camper propane tanks?
Portable RV cylinders (the 20, 30 and 40 lb tanks you can lift off the tongue): usually yes, if they're in date and in good shape. Tanks permanently mounted on an RV need a station that can fill on the vehicle; call 631-264-8800 and ask before you drive over.
Do you fill the propane tank at my house?
No. We don't deliver propane and we don't fill tanks that stay at a house (the large tanks next to a home or buried in the yard). Those need a propane delivery company. We refill portable tanks you bring to us.
How do I know if my propane tank is expired?
Look at the collar (the metal ring around the valve). The manufacture date is stamped as month and year, for example 04-18. A DOT cylinder can be filled for 12 years from that date. After that it must be requalified, which adds a new date stamp with a letter, or replaced.
Is refilling cheaper than exchanging?
Usually you get more propane for your money with a refill, because many exchange tanks are filled with less than 20 lb. Call 631-264-8800 for today's refill price.
