Oil Tank Whistle (Vent Alarm): What It Means
From the Alcus family · Alcus Fuel Oil & Sons, Amityville · Updated November 1, 2026
Heard a whistle from your oil tank or the pipe outside during a delivery? That's the vent alarm, and it's doing its job. Here's what it means and what to watch for.
What the whistle is
Most home oil tanks have two pipes outside: the fill pipe, where the driver connects the hose, and the vent pipe, which lets air out of the tank. The vent alarm, or whistle, sits on the vent. As oil goes in, it pushes air out through the vent and the whistle sounds. When the oil gets close to the top, the whistle stops.
The driver listens for it. While it whistles, there's room in the tank. When it goes quiet, it's time to stop.
When there is no whistle
No whistle during a fill can mean:
- The alarm is broken or worn out, or
- the vent is blocked by ice, snow, a nest or debris.
Either way, the driver can't hear when the tank is nearly full. To avoid overfilling, our driver may stop short and let you know. Ask us to check the vent and alarm at your next tune-up.
Why overfilling matters
An overfilled tank means a spill. Oil can come out of the vent pipe outside, and pressure can push oil out of fittings on the tank. A blocked vent makes this more likely. If oil does spill, see oil tank leaking: what to do, and if you only smell oil, read oil smell after a delivery.
A whistle when nobody is delivering
If you hear the whistle and no one is filling the tank, call us at 631-264-8800. It's unusual and worth a look.
Keep the fill pipe and vent clear
- Shovel snow away from both pipes and keep a path to them.
- Knock ice off the vent cap gently, without hitting the pipe.
- Trim bushes and plants away from the pipes.
- Make sure the caps are on and the pipes are easy to find.

Questions
Why does my oil tank whistle during a delivery?
The vent alarm whistles while oil going in pushes air out of the tank. It stops when the tank is nearly full, which tells the driver to stop.
My tank whistled when nobody was delivering. Is that a problem?
Call us at 631-264-8800. A whistle with no delivery is unusual and is worth checking.
What if my tank doesn't whistle?
The whistle may be broken or the vent may be blocked. Without it the driver can't hear when the tank is nearly full, so our driver may stop short and let you know. Have it checked at your next tune-up.
Can I fix the vent alarm myself?
Don't take the vent or alarm apart yourself. Keep the vent clear of snow, ice and bushes, and ask us about it at your tune-up.
